SOLO PHOTO EXHIBITION «BALTYISK» BY ANASTASYA KHOROSHILOVA

On April 24 at 4 p.m. there will be a presentation of solo exhibition «Baltyisk» by Anastasya Khoroshilova within the framework of the Baltic Biennale of Photography Photomania-2009 at the Kaliningrad Art Gallery. The audience got an opportunity to see the 14 photos made by the author during her visit to Baltyisk in 2005. Anastasia tried to approach the unique atmosphere of this city, that mixture of history, the army and everyday life and to explain it in visual terms.

Having received education and commenced her creative way in Germany, Nastya Khoroshilova is part of a phenomemon that critics have aptly called «post-diasporas». These are artists educated and first established abroad who feel themselves organic parts of the international scene, but who do not consider themselves emigrants. At the same time, they do not see themselves as citizens of the world (cosmopolites) and do not consider their identity burdensome.

Khoroshilova has made the majority of her recent works in Russia. They emerged due to special artistic trips which were almost research expeditions. Which is natural – the complexity of the artist’s relations with Russia evokes the desire to see the country which she’s trying to associate herself with. And still her vision of the life in Russia is devoid of any prejudices and a priori judgments what one could usually expect from a foreigner or an ingrained Russian. She is neither of it, thus, she is free of advertising clichs and cultural stereotypes, of nostalgic sentiments and critical attitudes. She doesn’t mourn over «the Russia that we have lost» and does not search for the moral foundations of the Russian life on the periphery. She’s neither looking for «the abomination of desolation», nor she’s trying to find the signs of a new life. By discovering the Russian out-of-the-way places for herself she’s not aspiring for something definite at all and does not make any attempts to find it: she just wants to see – to see and capture it as it is.
