MEETING WITH THE ARTIST SAI HUA KUAN
On April 9, 2009 a meeting with the artist Sai Hua Kuan was held in the conference hall of the Tchekhov library in the framework of the education program of the Kaliningrad Branch of NCCA.
Sai Hua Kuan was born in Singapore and now lives and works both in the United Kingdom and Singapore. His art is realized in a diverse and often unconventional range of media, including installation, sculpture, film, photography and performance. He graduated from Slade School of Fine Art, University College London in 2007, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions internationally, including in the UK, Canada, Germany, France and Singapore.
Sai Hua Kuan about his artistic experience:
I play with materials enjoying the process of transforming forms, shapes, or even smells and humidity. Form is a very important process in my idea gestation. I enjoy very much the ways in dismantling, deconstructing and reconstructing materials and objects, as my thoughts often come to me spontaneously during the playful process. Grown up in a small island country Singapore, only slightly more than 3.5 times the size of Washington, D.C., this is a lifetime adventure for an inland resident in contesting with limited spaces, searching for alternative spaces and adapting a fast-changing but self-contained space with no escapes. Laozi’s ancient cosmic thinking: Nothingness — Nothing is Permanent and Everything Comes and Goes in Cycles, has also influenced greatly my thoughts. The nothingness can be witnessed in my works, as in its physical/non-physical, visual/non-visual form is a statement of my life journey.
One of the artist’s recent projects «Space drawing» won the Szpilman award-2008 (Berlin, Germany) which is awarded to works that exist only for a moment or a short period of time. In the project Sai Hua Kuan investigates the fundamental functions of a line – to divide, subtract and define a space.
In 2009 the «Space drawing» project won the Fourth Open International Competition «Tower Kronprinz: Second Advent». The project is adjusted and modified to fit into each specific place and meet a particular audience in order to create a closer visual and audio link to the space. Specially adapted for the Kronprinz tower, the project will be presented to the audience in the context of the regional event «Night of Museums» on May 15, 2009 in Kaliningrad.
