Daniel Schorno: Sound-art-music through new instruments-a hands-on approach
The Kaliningrad Branch of NCCA presents «Acoustic Diagnostic» project. As part of it, from 12th till 16th of June 2008 the first project session with Daniel Schorno, the representative of electro-experimental music studio «STEIM» (Amsterdam, the Netherlands) was held.
«STEIM» has for almost four decades been a center for research and development of new instruments for performers of electronic music. It has been functioning as a laboratory, workshop, international meeting place, artist hotel and production office for live electro-acoustic music, DJ's, VJ's, theater and installation makers, video artists, composers and as nomad studio.
Daniel Schorno — composer, sound artist and former artistic director of STEIM with which he is still cooperating at present. Since 1997 Daniel Schorno has been actively participating in creating the so-called «new instruments» and implementing various sound projects in collaboration with different music ensembles, dancers and artists. His passion for innovative new forms of musical expression is reflected by his ongoing performances and joint projects «Kairos-Duo» and «New Media Pocket Opera», as well as by creating «eponymous» * instruments. The term is used to define unique musical instruments that are electronic, self-made, sound producing or of the ’meta' type, and most importantly have embedded in them the characteristics associated with virtuosity in performance.
*The term «eponymous» is widely used to mean «self-titled». Eponym is the name of the person given rise to the name of a particular object which he invented or discovered.
On the 12th of June the lecture of Daniel Schorno in which he told about his artistic experience and present several STEIM projects was held in the office of KB NCCA.
As part of «Acoustic Diagnostic» project working session Daniel Schorno also held a special workshop for Kaliningrad sound artists on the creation of their own music instruments and objects. A joint audio performance of the participants and their «new instruments» was held on the 16th of June in the lecture-room in the Kaliningrad Art Gallery.
